the bill's sponsor, dianne feinstein today said she was told her assault weapons bill will be dropped by the senate democrats when they move their package on to the senate floor for a vote. now, if this seems weird or inconsistent, you're right. it is a little weird and inconsistent. the initial strategy of the democrats on gun issues was to move everything a la carte, so maybe you don't like the ban, but that shouldn't stop you for voting for an increase or background bill. so if you object to one part, you can still support the rest of it. that was the strategy at first. the strategy at the committee level, but now that they are past the committee level and on to the next step apparently, a la carte is over and the one bill will not include the ban. so you can fire dozens of rounds. senate democrats are not even going to try. what will be in the bill is still an unanswered question. but democrats aren't going to try for a limit on extended magazines. what about background checks? the group mayors against illegal guns released this ad today to try to keep the pressure on that issue.

yesterday, senator feinstein said the assault weapons ban is not going to be part of the bill. that's something you've been predicting for a while. i've been talking about for a couple weeks now. what are the chances we see it as added as an amendment possibly down the road. >> there's no doubt there'll be efforts to add it, i think this is the official death of the assault weapons ban. it's harry reid conceding it can't be part of the main bill. they're trying to focus on what is doable. what can they get done in april? and what they think can get done would be universal background checks, including for private transactions. if i was going to sell you a gun that doesn't have to be any sort of background check on that under a bill being knocked around in the senate, you would have to have some validation there before that purchase could be made. and that's the sticking point right now. that's a far cry from what democrats were talking about two or three months ago. that's a pretty small, narrow provision in the scope of all the big gun controls that democrats wanted to push in
